Janeese Lewis George, Candidate for Mayor, Broke Fundraising Records (Again!)

Lewis George raised more than $1.24 million in direct contributions and anticipated matching funds from more than 3,150 donors

Washington, DC Today, DC mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George announced the first fundraising report of her 2026 campaign. In just ten days since her launch, she raised a record-breaking $218,000 in direct contributions from more than 3,150 donors, more than 2,550 of whom are from DC. Thanks to the DC Fair Elections program, the campaign expects a total of roughly $1.24 million in direct contributions and anticipated matching funds.

The campaign set the District’s record for total number of donors and total donations raised and reported in an initial fundraising filing. This comes on the heels of the campaign breaking a record for the fastest a Mayoral candidate has ever qualified for the DC Fair Elections program, which she did in just a few hours since launching.

Campaign staff and volunteers spent dozens of hours manually uploading the thousands of donor records because the campaign system was not built to accommodate a filing of this unprecedented size. The campaign plans to file an amended report with the Office of Campaign Finance later in the week to include donors who contributed later in the day. The data in this press release accounts for all contributions received by 11:59pm on 12/10 even though the initial report cuts off at an earlier time.

Lewis George currently represents Ward 4 on the DC Council, where she has led the charge on lowering housing costs and raising wages for working people.

Lewis George released the following statement:

“I’m deeply touched by the outpouring of support that our campaign has received. This people-first campaign is powered by all 8 wards, and this achievement belongs to all of us because it took each and every one of us. These numbers are a reflection of the strength and dedication of our movement. It’s also a reflection of this moment. Change is necessary. We are just getting started. Thank you, DC!”

Last week, Councilmember Lewis George announced her candidacy for Mayor with a video. She also spoke with the Washington Post about her vision as DC mayor.
