Washington, DC — Today, Councilmember Janeese Lewis George announced her campaign for DC Mayor set the record for the most number of individual DC donors to give to any mayoral primary candidate in modern DC history.1 More than 4,000 DC residents contributed to Lewis George’s mayoral campaign as of midnight — over 400 more than the previous record set by former Mayor Adrian Fenty.

Since launching in December, Lewis George’s campaign has raised $341,112 from 4,077 individual DC donors, and the most common donation from supporters was $25. Thanks to the DC Fair Elections program, matching DC donations 5 to 1, the campaign has raised almost $2.2 million in direct contributions and anticipated matching funds. The campaign had 831 new DC donors since the last filing deadline in February.

The fundraising report comes as Lewis George, her campaign team, and volunteers host daily meet & greets and weekend canvasses. The campaign has knocked over 16,000 doors across all eight wards.

Just this past weekend, the campaign knocked 6,000 doors. Members of labor unions SEIU 32BJ as well as Unite Here Local 23 and Local 25, namely hospitality, stadium, airport, and property service workers, knocked 3,000 of those doors over the weekend in Ward 5. This past Friday, the campaign also hosted a fund-RAVEr dance party at a new H Street venue — one of over 100 events held since December’s launch.

As of March 11, over 2,000 people have signed up to volunteer and Janeese has received 20 endorsements, including from 9 labor unions (including the transit, teachers’, and carpenters’ unions), Greater Greater Washington (a nonprofit that advocates for equitable, sustainable housing and transportation policies), and the Sierra Club (an environmental organization that advocates for sustainability, health, climate, and and lower utility prices). At-Large Councilmember Robert White, Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, and former Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander have also endorsed Lewis George.

1 OCF publishes public data going back to 2003. During this period, the greatest number of individual contributors during a primary election was 3,656, achieved by Adrian Fenty in 2006. The primary that year was on September 12. Janeese for DC gained more DC donors in approximately four months than Fenty did in ten months–and Fenty was reported to have set the record for most grassroots donors in 2006.

2 Lewis George’s March 10 finance report shows contributions and expenditures as of 6 p.m. on March 10. The campaign will soon file an amendment to add contributions made between 6 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. However, this press advisory and the above table include the additional contributions made between 6 p.m. and midnight.
