Economic Development for a Thriving DC
DC should be a city of choice, where residents can build a career, raise a family, and become a part of the community. Our city must work for the people who live here in addition to the people who commute in for work and their employers. As mayor, Janeese will invest in realizing this vision of our city. She will:
Tackle economic disparities.
- Prioritize building grocery stores and retail in Wards 5, 7 and 8.
- Provide lease subsidies for small businesses in underserved neighborhoods.
Reimagine a thriving downtown for all.
- Create a Downtown Development Corporation with bonding authority and foster mixed-use development: less office space and more housing.
- Use DC-owned and vacant spaces to house pop-ups, incubators, and small businesses.
- Integrate transportation infrastructure that improves walkability.
Leverage the economic power of universities and hospitals.
- Partner with DC’s anchor universities to build innovation districts and a global higher education hub that result in employment opportunities.
- Develop a health innovation program in cooperation with area hospitals.
- Promote university-based retirement communities that attract older residents.
Make Union Station the East Coast’s premier transit hub.
- Build out Union Station redevelopment, creating thousands of jobs, and foster transit-oriented housing development.
