Homes For All

Every Washingtonian deserves to have a home that they can afford. But the cost of buying or even renting a home is increasingly out of reach for too many DC residents.

As Mayor, Janeese will deliver homes for all in DC by:

Building more and better homes. Janeese will reform zoning laws, streamline the permitting process, and break down other barriers to building more housing all across the city and particularly near the Metro, schools, and parks. She will launch Dignified Homes DC, a bold commitment to build publicly owned, mixed-income housing with stable and affordable rents that put people ahead of profit.

Expanding homeownership. Janeese will prioritize downpayment assistance, foreclosure prevention aid, and support for senior homeowners. She will restore tenants’ purchasing rights by strengthening DC’s powerful anti-displacement law, the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA).

Delivering accountability. Janeese will make it easier for tenants to request building inspections and create an ombudsman to support people living in public housing. She will increase penalties for landlords who violate tenants’ rights and ensure that any deals using public dollars are tied to measurable outcomes.
